United hosts Reading in FA Cup start

MANCHESTER United will begin its FA Cup defense at home to a Reading side managed by its former defender Jaap Stam, while its local rival Manchester City visits West Ham United in the third round after the draw was made on Monday.

English Premier League leader Chelsea will host Notts County or Peterborough, league champion Leicester City will visit fellow top-flight Everton, while Liverpool welcomes Newport County or Plymouth Argyle in ties to be played between January 6-9.

Arsenal, which like Manchester United has won the famous old trophy a record 12 times, travels to Preston North End, while north London rival and eight-time winner Tottenham Hotspur entertains Aston Villa, which has won the FA Cup on seven occasions.

Seventh-tier Stourbridge United, the lowest ranked team left in the competition, faces a rearranged second-round tie at home to Northampton Town on December 13 before it can contemplate a visit to league Two (fourth-tier) Wycombe Wanderers.

There are four all-Premier League ties, including Hull City at home to Swansea City and Burnley away to Sunderland.

Second-tier Reading’s boss Stam was a fan favorite during three years at United, where the Netherlands international was part of the famous 1998-99 treble-winning side under Alex Ferguson. He also won league titles either side of that historic season.

Stam’s former United teammate Andy Cole expects the Dutchman to get a good reception on his return to Old Trafford. “I look forward to that,” the former England striker told the BBC. “He’s done very well at Reading. I’m really pleased for him.”

Stam took over at Reading in the close season and has guided it to third place in the Championship. United is sixth in the Premier League under its new manager Jose Mourinho.
