Shenzhen FC appoints Eriksson as head coach

FORMER Shanghai SIPG manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has joined China’s second tier league side Shenzhen FC to replace Clarence Seedorf, the club announced through its official Weibo account on Monday morning.

The club’s statement said the decision was made for the sake of its development, and thanked Seedorf’s coaching team for their devotion.

“Mr Eriksson is a world-known experienced manager… He has been coaching in China since June, 2013, and is familiar with Chinese football. We hope his arrival will help Shenzhen attract the world’s attention and build the club into a city name card,” said the statement.

The two sides are reported to have signed a 1+2 deal – if Eriksson leads Shenzhen into the CSL at the end of the 2017 season, the contract will be automatically extended for two more years. If not, the Swede will no longer be the manager.

Shenzhen finished ninth in the 16-team Chinese League One in 2016. They named Seedorf the head coach last July. The club had been known for the quality of its young players, and reached a peak in 2004 wining the CSL title. Since then they struggled to match the same success and was relegated to the second tier league at the end of the 2011 season.

Eriksson is making a return to south China’s Guangdong Province, who coached Guangzhou R&F from 2013 to 2014 before joining SIPG. The 68-year-old was replaced by Andre Villas-Boas last month after spending two years in Shanghai. He led SIPG into its first Asian Champions League, and the club finished third in the Chinese Super League last year.
