Shenhua set to sign Martins from MLS

SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua is close to signing Nigerian international Obafemi Martins but the future of Australian midfielder Tim Cahill remains a doubt.

On Sunday, BBC reported that Martins, who plays for the Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders, was set to join Shenhua in a “multi-million” dollar deal. He scored 43 goals in 84 appearances for the MLS club.

Shenhua left yesterday for Jeju Island in South Korea to play some pre-season friendly matches. There was no official confirmation but new head coach Gregorio Manzano said that he was expecting a newcomer to join the team in Korea.

If confirmed, the 31-year-old Nigerian will become the club’s second foreign signing for the new season following the arrival of Colombian Fredy Guarin last month.

The 2016 CSL season will kick off next month.

But in another development, Australian international Tim Cahill was not on the flight to South Korea, fueling reports that his Shanghai adventure may come to an abrupt end. The club did not comment but Manzano confirmed that the club took a decision on Saturday to let Cahill stay back in Shanghai instead of joining the team for the friendlies.

“No decision (about Cahill) has been made yet,” the Spaniard told reporters yesterday at the airport. “If Martins can join Shenhua, I hope he will be as professional as Cahill, train hard and contribute goals and assists.”

Cahill, a fan favorite, scored 11 goals in his 24 appearances for Shenhua last year after struggling initially at the start of the season. He extended his contract with the club last October.

The former Everton player has been critical of the big-money spending by the CSL sides, saying that greed was behind the proliferation of big-name players heading to China, which would hamper Chinese development.
