Shenhua punishes R&F 5-1
SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua whitewashed Guangzhou R&F 5-1 in the Chinese Super League yesterday, just days after notching up a 5-0 win over Qingdao Zhongneng in the CFA Cup.
Striker Lu Zheng grabbed the lead for the host minutes after the start of the game at the Hongkou Football Stadium but Guangzhou leveled it through Xiao Zhi in the 11th minute. The tie remained unchanged till Shenhua captain Giovanni Moreno scored from the far post 11 minutes after the break.
The goal-flow started in the 75th minute when Shenhua’s Cao Yunding found the net after picking up an accurate pass from Colombian Fredy Guarin.
Demba Ba added another in the 83rd minute — his eighth goal (six in the league) for Shenhua this season. Guangzhou’s defense collapsed as Shenhua’s Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins also got on to the scoresheet to make it 5-1 for the home side.
“It will help boost our confidence,” Lu Zheng said after the match. “But the score did not reflect the true ability of the two teams.”
Greenland Shenhua is sixth in the 16-team standing with 13 points.
On Saturday, Shanghai’s other outfit SIPG lost 1-2 to Beijing Guo’an in the capital to end its five-match winning streak. It was Guo’an’s second win after eight rounds of the CSL matches this season.
SIPG’s Brazilian striker Elkeson missed the game with an injury. Ghanaian forward Asamoah Gyan was also substituted by Lu Wenjun just nine minutes after kick-off, also due to an injury. Beijing’s Brazilian midfielder Ralf grabbed the opener in the 26th minute before SIPG’s Ivory Coast player Jean Evrard Kouassi found the net for the equalizer after teaming up with Argentine teammate Dario Conca five minutes later.
But Beijing’s Zhang Xizhe notched the winner 10 minutes into the second half.
SIPG head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said Beijing did not create many chances in the match. It had two opportunities and grabbed both of them.
“We should not have lost this match,” the Swede said. “But life goes on, and we shall start preparing for the AFC Champions League match (against Sydney FC) on Tuesday.”
Guo’an is ninth jointly with three other teams, while SIPG, with 17 points, is third behind Guangzhou Evergrande (24) and Jiangsu Suning (21).
