Shenhua invites fans to design new emblem

SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua has launched a charm offensive to win over disgruntled fans by inviting them to redesign the club’s emblem for next season.

Earlier this year, the new owners had stoked up controversy by changing the decade-old team crest that infuriated fans.

The new emblem must contain elements of the club’s investor Greenland as well as the previous brand “Shenhua.” It should carry the team’s jersey color — blue, while the team’s lucky mascot, the leopard, is desired but not necessary, the club said on its official website.

Fans can send the designs in jpg format to clublogo@shenhuafc.com.cn before June 30 along with their personal details. The new emblem will be unveiled in July.

Property developer Greenland took over the troubled club in the offseason and in February this year replaced Shenhua with Greenland in the emblem.

The club also changed its name to Shanghai Greenland FC, sparking protests by the fans. Eventually, the team was registered as Shanghai Greenland Shenhua but it did little to assuage the fans.

After a meeting with the club’s representatives and the fans in Shanghai a decision was reached to incorporate “Shenhua” back in the emblem next season.

The statement on the club’s website was signed as “Shanghai Greenland (Shenhua) FC.” A club official said the brackets on Shenhua will be removed at the end of the season after registering with the industry and commerce administration.

Greenland is 12th in the 16-team Chinese Super League after 14 rounds.

City rivals East Asia and Shenxin are 6th (23) and 9th (16) with Guangzhou Evergrande on top with 32 points.
