SIPG star Conca out for season due to leg surgery

SHANGHAI SIPG playmaker Dario Conca will miss the rest of the season after deciding to undergo leg surgery in the United States, the Chinese Super League club has said.

The Argentine picked up the injury last Friday when he scored the second goal in SIPG’s 4-1 CSL victory over Shijiazhuang Ever Bright. He crashed into Shijiazhuang goalie Guan Zhen when taking the shot, and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher. The club said Conca injured his meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament in the left leg. He left for the US this week. Conca will miss the rest of the CSL season, as well as the club’s Asian Champions League matches. Sven-Goran Eriksson’s side is currently fourth in the CSL standings with seven more rounds to go. It drew 0-0 with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in their ACL quarterfinal first leg at Shanghai Stadium on Tuesday. The second leg is on September 13, when SIPG will be without Brazil striker Elkeson, out due to accumulation of yellow cards. SIPG is also missing Elkeson’s injured compatriot Hulk.
