SIPG halts Evergrande win streak

SHANGHAI SIPG ended Guangzhou Evergrande’s nine-match winning streak in the Chinese Super League with a 1-1 draw last night despite the absence of some key foreign players.

The CSL defending champion had won nine of its first 10 matches this year, except for the season opener against Chongqing Lifan.

SIPG was missing three of its foreign stars in Guangzhou, capital of south China’s Guangdong Province. Midfield organizer Dario Conca was suspended for accumulation of yellow cards. Former Guangzhou striker Elkeson was also not allowed in the lineup because to contract limitations. Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan did not even make the team due to injury.

The hosts, led by World Cup winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, sent their strongest squad for the match and pushed for victory from the start, though they had to wait until the second half for their goal. Brazil midfielder Ricardo Goulart broke through SIPG’s defense from the right wing to score when the visitors lost concentration eight minutes after the break.

Guangzhou’s lead did not last long as SIPG’s Ivory Coast striker Jean Evrard Kouassi made good use of his speed to beat defender Mei Fang and equalized in the 70th.

Despite the 23 goal attempts against SIPG’s 9, Guangzhou had to settle for a draw. It continues to lead the CSL standings on 28 points. SIPG is fourth on 21 points.

Another Shanghai team Greenland Shenhua drew 2-2 with Tianjin Teda on Friday to end its two-match winning streak in the league.

Wagner and Mbaye Diagne gave Tianjin the lead twice but Shenhua’s Demba Ba leveled first, on an assist from Colombia midfielder Fredy Guarin, for his seventh league goal of the season. Guarin scored the second in the 67th.

The draw gave both sides shared 6th place in the CSL standings with 17 points.

In other 11th round CSL matches, an 88th-minute goal from former Shenhua player Tim Cahill helped Hangzhou Greentown to draw 1-1 with Jiangsu Suning. Suning is third in the standings on 22 points after three winless rounds.

Beijing Guo’an beat Shandong Luneng 2-0 to climb to 10th while Hebei China Fortune beat Chongqing Lifan 3-1 to overtake Jiangsu and go second on 23 points.
