SIPG fans gather at local bar to watch AFC Champions League away match

HUNDREDS of Shanghai SIPG fans watched their team’s 2017 AFC Champions League win in Seoul at Shanghai Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Andre Villas-Boas’ team beat South Korean side FC Seoul 1-0 in its Group F opener at the World Cup Stadium in Seoul. A 25-yard strike by Brazilian striker Hulk in the 53rd minute proved to be the winner for the Chinese Super League side. SIPG goalkeeper Yan Junling denied a point to the hosts after saving Dejan Damjanovic’s penalty and stealing three points for the visitors.

The match in Seoul was attended by some 300 Chinese supporters – some of them flew to South Korea for the match from Shanghai, while the others were Chinese in South Korea. Most others watched the match on a giant screen at Shanghai Beer Factory, a restaurant-bar near Shanghai Stadium.

SIPG general manager Sui Guoyang did not travel with the team but watched the match with the fans at the bar.

“This is our way to stay in touch with our team despite the distance,” said a local fan named Zhang Fu. “We were reduced to ten men (after center back He Guan was shown a second yellow card for bringing down Damjanovic in the box), but the team managed to withstand the pressure, especially as it was playing away from home. I’m looking forward to the next home match.”

SIPG will welcome Western Sydney Wanderers at Shanghai Stadium next Tuesday. The Australian side lost 0-4 to Urawa Red Diamonds earlier today.
