Pep’s boys start Cup defense at Swansea City

MANCHESTER City will start its defense of the English Football League Cup with a third-round trip to fellow Premier League side Swansea City.

City won the competition last season under Manuel Pellegrini with a penalty shoot-out victory over Liverpool after a 1-1 draw in the final at Wembley.

Now managed by Pep Guardiola, City received a bye to the third round due to its participation in the UEFA Champions League and, on the day it defeated Steaua Bucharest 1-0 to clinch its place in the group stages of Europe’s elite club competition, the League Cup draw sent it to the Liberty Stadium.

City’s rival Manchester United will travel to third-tier giant-killer Northampton, which shocked West Bromwich Albion in a penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw in the second round on Tuesday.

Chelsea faces an intriguing clash at Premier League champion Leicester City, while Arsenal visits second tier Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool takes on second tier Derby at the iPro Stadium and Tottenham hosts third tier Gillingham, which enjoyed a 2-1 win at Premier League Watford in the second round.

Fourth tier Accrington’s reward for its 1-0 second-round win against Premier League Burnley is a trip to West Ham.

Fulham, which beat top-flight Middlesbrough 2-1 in the second round, takes on Bristol City.

Meanwhile, City will play a sixth straight season in Europe’s elite competition after beating Steaua 1-0 thanks to Fabian Delph’s 56th-minute goal and completing a 6-0 win on aggregate. Goalkeeper Joe Hart made what could be his last start for City after losing his regular place under Guardiola.

“We have a top manager that the club has wanted a long, long time, and he’s going to have his opinion on things,” said Hart, who was given a rousing reception by City fans and appeared emotional during and at the end of the match.

Elsewhere, Raffael and Thorgan Hazard scored hat tricks as Borussia Moenchengladbach routed Young Boys 6-1 for a 9-2 win on aggregate, sealing an immediate return to the group stage for the German side.

Both Germany and England will have a full quota of four teams in yesterday’s draw. City, a semifinalist last season, will be one of the second seeds.

Russia’s Rostov advanced 5-2 on aggregate over Ajax Amsterdam — a four-time European champion — in its first season trying to qualify for the Champions League.
