Montella hired as Milan coach

SAMPDORIA manager Vincenzo Montella was on Tuesday appointed as the new coach of AC Milan on a two-year contract, the Serie A side announced.

The 42-year-old Italian succeeds compatriot Cristian Brocchi, who has fulfilled the role as caretaker boss since Sinisa Mihajlovic was sacked in April.

Milan finished last season in seventh, missing out on a place in Europe.

“The club is convinced that the brilliant system of play of the new Rossoneri coach will be the basis of a fruitful and positive partnership,” the club declared in a statement.

After a 0-1 Italian Cup final loss to Juventus in May Brocchi had conceded his job was on the line.

Since the departure of Massimiliano Allegri, who is now at Juventus, in January 2014 a series of managers — Italy’s Filippo Inzaghi, Dutchman Clarence Seedorf, Mihajlovic of Serbia and Brocchi — have come and gone at the San Siro without success.

Montella, a former international striker who played for AS Roma and Sampdoria, is one of the well regarded younger managers in Serie A.

He joins Milan after spells with Catania, Fiorentina and his old club Sampdoria.

He arrives as club owner Silvio Berlusconi’s Milan is in talks with Chinese investors about a takeover.

Meanwhile, Genoa’s former Croatian midfielder Ivan Juric was named as the Serie A side’s new manager.

The 40-year-old, who played for Genoa between 2006 and 2010, succeeds his former boss Gianpero Gasperini, who after leading the side to 11th place last season has moved on to Atalanta.

Juric was in charge of Crotone last term, guiding it to promotion for the first time in its history after topping the Serie B table.

Juric was assistant to Gasperini at both Inter Milan and Palermo.
