Manchester derby canceled at Beijing Bird's Nest due to bad weather

THE much-awaited Manchester derby between City and United in Beijing today has been called off due to bad weather.

“Due to recent weather events, tournament organizers & participating clubs have decided to cancel tonight’s International Champions Cup game,” Manchester United said on its official twitter account.

The organizers also posted a notice on the tournament’s official site, saying the match was canceled due to weather.

“Beijing encountered continuous heavy raining days recently. To ensure the safety of players and fans, the organizers, Manchester United and Manchester City decided to cancel this match,” the notice said.

The match was supposed to be first derby match outside England between the two sides, and was due to kick off at Beijing’s National Stadium at 7:30pm.

This year’s three-match ICC China tournament involved three teams -- Manchester United, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund. United lost 1-4 to the Bundesliga side in the first match in Shanghai last Friday.

The organizers said the third match between City and Dortmund, scheduled for Thursday in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, will go ahead.

United manager Jose Mourinho told the media on Sunday, “It is almost the end and we can go home and train in conditions where the players are safe.”

Mourinho’s players were forced to land in Tianjin on Saturday due to a violent storm in Beijing. The stadium turf was also in bad condition due to rains.
