Kranjcar’s superb late goal as QPR holds Stoke
NIKO Kranjcar scored a superb late free kick to rescue a point for Queens Park Rangers in an entertaining 2-2 English Premier League draw against Stoke City at Loftus Road yesterday.
Kranjcar’s brilliant equalizer in the 88th minute came after Peter Crouch had starred for visiting Stoke, setting up its opening goal, slicing Steven Caulker’s header into his own net for QPR’s leveller and scoring to make it 2-1 in an eventful performance.
Stoke opened the scoring in the 11th when the imposing Crouch out-jumped former England teammate Rio Ferdinand to nod Victor Moses’s cross into the path of Mame Biram Diouf for a simple finish.
QPR, which had struggled to cope with the pace of Stoke’s counter-attacks for much of the first half, pulled a goal back after 42 minutes when Crouch miscued his clearance from Caulker’s goal-bound header.
He redeemed himself with a brilliant left-footed finish before the Croatia international’s late heroics lifted the gloom at struggling QPR.
“It’s a huge disappointment,” Crouch told BT Sport television. “It was a great free kick but if you don’t go and get the three or four goals, you’re always susceptible to that.
“It was a bit of a sucker blow, it’s hard to take but if you don’t punish teams you’re always susceptible to drawing a game.”
The draw leaves Stoke and QPR with just one win each after five league games.
Stoke, which sits in 13th place following the early kickoff with five points, is a point and two places ahead of QPR.
Chelsea leads the standings with 12 points, after four wins from four games. It visits Manchester City today, with the defending champion sitting fifth with 7 points.
Chelsea is two points ahead of Aston Villa, which was hosting Arsenal later yesterday.
