Klopp tipped to be next City boss

JUERGEN Klopp is being tipped as Manchester City’s next manager after announcing yesterday that he would be leaving Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season after seven years in charge.

With Manuel Pellegrini’s future at City under scrutiny after his side’s feeble defense of the English Premier League title and another disappointing Champions League campaign, speculation is rife that Klopp will replace the Chilean.

Pellegrini has one more year left on his contract.

British bookmaker William Hill said Klopp, who captured two Bundesliga titles for Dortmund and reached the Champions League final, was 5-4 favorite to be the next City manager and quoted odds of 6-4 that his next club would be the English champion.

Klopp has also been linked with Real Madrid.

It is easy to see why Klopp is being linked with City.

He has bags of charisma, a proven record in the Champions League where City has struggled, speaks good English and plays an attacking brand of football.

The 47-year-old went on record last year that he would be interested in working in the Premier League.

Klopp said earlier that he was leaving Dortmund at the end of the season despite a contract running to 2018 because he does not feel he is the right man for the job any more.

“I’ve always said that I would say it if I’m not the perfect coach for this club,” Klopp told reporters, sitting next to club bosses Hans-Joachim Watzke and Michael Zorc.

“Dortmund need a change.”

“I picked this time to make my announcement so as not to create any time pressure as was the case in the last few years with some player decisions. I definitely believe this is completely the right decision.”

Club officials said they would not talk about possible successors out of respect for Klopp, who took over in 2008.

Dortmund has had a dismal domestic campaign which saw the club Klopp led to titles in 2011 and 2012 battle with relegation until a recent improvement.

“We, everyone at Dortmund, must now prepare for your departure in the coming weeks, a departure worthy of your achievements,” sports director Zorc told Klopp.

“It was a wonderful time for me.”

Klopp also coached Mainz 05 between 2001 and 2008.
