Juve loses in derby marred by violence

JUVENTUS was prevented from clinching a fourth consecutive Serie A title with a 1-2 loss at Torino yesterday in a derby marred by fan violence.

After Andrea Pirlo put Juventus ahead with a free kick 35 minutes in, fellow Italy international Matteo Darmian equalized just before halftime and former Juventus forward Fabio Quagliarella scored the winner in the 57th for Torino, which prevailed over its more glamorous neighbor for the first time in 20 years. Minutes earlier Pirlo had struck the post from another free kick.

Before the match, Torino fans assaulted the bus carrying Juve’s players as it approached the stadium, breaking a window. Juventus supporters retaliated by throwing fireworks at Torino rivals inside the stadium, injuring several.

The Gazzetta dello Sport reported that 10 fans were injured, two of them seriously. The injured fans were treated inside the stadium and then transported to a local hospital, it added.

Juventus needed a win and a Lazio loss to clinch but Lazio was held to a 1-1 draw at home by lowly Chievo Verona.

Juventus, on 73 points, is 14 ahead of Lazio with six matches remaining.

On Saturday, Mauro Icardi scored in added time as Inter Milan beat AS Roma 2-1 at the San Siro to signal a late charge for a spot in Europe.

Roma lies third, a point behind Lazio.

Midfielder Hernanes put Inter ahead 15 minutes in with a spectacular shot from beyond the area after creating some space amid several defenders.

Roma’s Radja Nainggolan equalized in the 63rd, finishing off a counterattack with a long angled shot that left goalkeeper Samir Handanovic immobile.

Icardi wasted a golden chance to win it for Inter when he shot high in the 84th but he made up for it a few minutes later, finding the target after being set up by Lukas Podolski.

Inter moved up to seventh, five points from the Europa League places.
