Guangzhou goes top after Eastern win, Jiangsu falls
BIG-SPENDING Guangzhou Evergrande finally won again in the AFC Champions League last night, beating Hong Kong minnow Eastern SC 6-0.
Guangzhou, coached by Luiz Felipe Scolari and champion in 2013 and 2015, moved into first place in Group G with nine points. The Chinese Super League team opened the group with 7-0 win over debutant Eastern SC and its trailblazing female coach, but played out three straight draws after that.
Paulinho and Alan grabbed doubles to bury Eastern, whose coach Chan Yuen-ting, nicknamed ‘Beef Ball’, had become the first woman worldwide to lead a professional men’s team into continental competition. Ricardo Goulart and Yu Hanchao also scored for Guangzhou in China’s Hong Kong.
In the other group match, South Korean club Suwon Samsung Bluewings missed an opportunity to progress after losing at home to Japanese team Kawasaki Frontale 0-1.
Suwon will next play at Guangzhou, which will have to win to guarantee progression.
Only the top two teams from each of the eight groups advance to the next round.
In Group H, South Korea’s Jeju United went second with a 2-1 win over Jiangsu Suning in Nanjing. The hosts had already qualified with four wins from the first four games.
Former Chelsea midfielder Ramires scored for the hosts.
Adelaide United moved into third place in the group after a 3-3 draw Gamba Osaka.
Baba Diawara’s flicked header in the 91st minute completed Adelaide’s second fightback of the night after it had recovered from falling 0-2 behind in the first 12 minutes.
It leaves Adelaide two points off the qualification spots heading into the final round of group games, where it faces a must-win clash against Jiangsu.
Shun Nagasawa’s near-post header from a corner put Gamba ahead after 6 minutes, before 18-year-old Ritsu Doan spotted Adelaide goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic off his line to make it 2-0.
Adelaide’s Sergio Cirio scored just before half-time and Jordan O’Doherty produced a spectacular finish to level the scores at 2-2 after the break. Michael Marrone’s own goal seemed to have sealed Adelaide’s fate, but the game had a final twist when Diawara rose unchallenged to rescue a point for the visitors.
Gamba, which is now eliminated, was left to rue a penalty miss by Japan veteran Yasuhito Endo, when the scores were locked at 2-2.
