Evergrande stays top with Shenhua win

GUANGZHOU Evergrande retained the top spot in the Chinese Super League standings after a 2-1 home victory over a battling Shanghai Greenland Shenhua last night.

With the crucial last group stage match of the Asian Champions League in midweek in mind, Guangzhou sent an all-Chinese squad in the first half.

But the defending champion was no less aggressive as Liao Lisheng hit the visitors’ post with a direct free kick in the 19th minute.

Guangzhou’s first goal came in the 40th, when Feng Junyan broke through a careless Shenhua defense and beat goalkeeper Geng Xiaofeng to find the net.

The hosts doubled the advantage seven minutes into the second half, when Gao Lin’s thunderbolt from 10 meters out of the box crashed into the far corner of the net. Gao was substituted by Brazilian midfielder Elkeson 10 minutes later.

The visitors managed to pull one back in the 81st, when Guangzhou’s Liu Jian used his hands to block Xu Liang’s attempt inside the box, granting Shenhua a chance from the spot. Syrian striker Firas al-Khatib converted the resulting penalty.

Evergrande will now concentrate on the Asian Champions League match against Japan’s Yokohoma F Marinos on Tuesday. It needs at least a draw to advance.

In another top clash last night, visiting Shandong Luneng beat 10-man Beijing Guo’an 3-0 thanks to a hat trick from Brazilian striker Vagner Love.

The first goal came in the 9th when Love beat Beijing goaltender Yang Zhi on a header pass from Han Peng.

Beijing’s Ecuadorian midfielder Joffre Guerron was sent off with a straight red card after getting into a scuffle with Shandong’s Dai Lin as the two battled for the ball on sideline in the 13th.

Love scored two more goals in the second half, lifting Shandong on to second place on 16 points from seven rounds, two behind Guangzhou. Beijing is third with 15 points.

Shanghai East Asia will challenge Dalian Aerbin this afternoon while the other Shanghai team, Shenxin, faces Jiangsu Sainty.
