Chile beats Iceland to capture first China Cup title
ANGELO Sagal scored the only goal of the match in the 18th minute as Chile beat Iceland 1-0 to capture the inaugural China Cup title in Nanning yesterday.
Leonardo Valencia of Chile was everywhere on the pitch, with his long shot in the 15th minute narrowly flying over the bar. Chile broke the deadlock three minutes later as Sagal swung in a powerful header after a cross from Oscar Opazo.
Valencia missed his long-range free-kick in the 25th minute, and a header from teammate Eduardo Vargas also went over the bar before the break.
The second half saw both sides wasting chances. Unmarked Opazo missed a sitter from inside the box in the 48th minute.
On Saturday, China surprised Croatia in a penalty shootout to finish third in the tournament. Substitute Wang Jingbin headed in the equalizer in the 89th minute after Luka Ivanusec had opened the account for Croatia.
In the shootout, Antonio Perosevic rattled the bar before Croatian goalkeeper Andrej Prskalo blocked Fan Xiaodong’s shot. Chinese goalie Shi Xiaotian blocked Josip Misic’s shot before Wang Jinxian secured the victory for the hosts.
