Chelsea bids for China's Evergrande defender Zhang Linpeng

ENGLISH Premier League defending champion Chelsea has been linked to Guangzhou Evergrande defender Zhang Linfang days before the closure of the transfer window.

Jose Mourinho’s team was reported to have submitted a bid for Zhang on Wednesday night, Titan Sports said.

According to the paper, Chelsea wanted an experienced right back to rotate with starter Branislav Ivanovic and had been watching Zhang for a while. The paper cited Mourinho as saying Zhang is a “top class Asian player, and owns everything required to stand onto the Premier League stage.”

The 26-year-old has been nicknamed Zhangmos for his similarity in looks and playing style with Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos. Former Evergrande manager Marcello Lippi once said Zhang was “the best Chinese player in the Chinese Super League.”

But Zhang would not be able to don Chelsea’s blue jersey immediately if the transfer is completed. Titan said Chelsea plans to send Zhang on loan to another European league club for a year. He has to earn a certain amount of playing time before being given the Labor Certification to play for Chelsea in the Premier League.

Zhang was reported to be excited about the offer. The paper quoted Zhang as saying: “I have worked hard in the past five to six years, and finally got the recognition from an English Premier League (club). Though I can’t play in the Premier League immediately, I believe that they will work out a most professional plan for me.”
