Cahill on target as Shenhua rises to 5th

Tim Cahill scored the only goal as Shanghai Greenland Shenhua beat Henan Jianye in a scorching conditions last night at Hongkou Football Stadium.

It was Shenhua’s third straight Chinese Super League victory, moving the team up to fifth on 32 points in the 16-team standings. City rival Shanghai SIPG leads the table with 45 points.

It was the fourth successive league match in which Cahill managed to score, and also his seventh goal for Shenhua.

Cahill led the team’s attack alongside Demba Ba while Giovanni Moreno marshalled the midfield.

The goal came three minutes after the break when a corner found both strikers in the box. Ba stopped the ball and Cahill fired it into the net.

The hosts played aggressively, creating several threatening chances in the first 15 minutes. Ba got a great pass right in front of an open goal in the 12th, but sent the ball over the bar with his thigh.

Henan goalkeeper Han Feng stopped a powerful header from Cahill a minute later. The Australian international came close to scoring at the end of the first half when his header hit the post in the 44th.

Neither team managed to change the scoreline after that, while the heat took its toll, exhausting players from both sides in the last 20 minutes.

Shenhua’s French manager Francis Gillot declared himself satisfied with the result, saying that the cheers from fans who showed up at Hongkou Stadium proved a boon for his players in the scorching weather.

The CSL will see a two-week break before the next round kicks off on August 11.
