CFA bans Shenhua's Qin for six months for stamping, fines 120,000 yuan

THE Chinese Football Association slapped a six-month ban and a 120,000-yuan (US$17,430) fine to Shanghai Greenland Shenhua midfielder Qin Sheng on Friday for deliberately stamping on the foot of Tianjin Quanjian’s Axel Witsel during their Chinese Super League match earlier this month. The club was also criticized for “affecting the image of Chinese football.”

The CFA’s punishments came 10 days after the club’s own punishments for the 30-year-old which was announced hours after the match – a 300,000 yuan fine and punished to the reserve team. Club general manager Wu Xiaohui said the club would not accept any transfer requests from Qin or other football clubs over the next four years. Qin will be paid Shanghai’s lowest wage of 2,190 yuan per month before the club “forgives” his wrong doings.

Qin saw a straight red for deliberately stamping on the foot of the Belgian 24 minutes after kick-off, leaving Shenhua with a man short for the majority of the 1-1 drawn match. The match was broadcasted live on CCTV as well as Britain’s Sky Sports. The incident was reported by a number of national and international media, which upset the CFA.

Shenhua’s 28-year-old defender Sun Shilin was the other player who was punished by the CFA for improper behavior in the same match. Sun gave a thumbs-up to Tianjin striker Alexandre Pato after the Brazilian blasted his penalty shot over the bar in the 84th minute. The picture of Sun’s giving thumbs-up spread widely online. Sun was told to go to Beijing and explain his manners to the CFA. He was given a two-match ban and a 10,000-yuan fine for “causing negative social influence.”

The CFA also criticized Greenland Shenhua for “not properly managing its players and affecting the image of China’s professional football.”

Meanwhile, Guangzhou Evergrande head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was given a one-match ban and fined 8,000 yuan for “irresponsible comments” during his post-match conference after Evergrande’s 1-2 defeat to Shandong Luneng in their second round of the CSL clash.

Evergrande captain Zheng Zhi missed the game after picking up a red card in the team’s first league match against Beijing.

After CFA’s decision to ban Zheng for one more match – the third round match against Shanghai SIPG, Scolari was upset about the decision.

“Think about who we are playing against next, and you might understand the decision,” said the Brazilian.

Evergrande will play SIPG in Guangzhou on April 1.
