Batista back as Shenhua coach
SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua has recalled former Argentina coach Sergio Batista after a poor start to its 2014 Chinese Super League campaign.
“We took the decision to have our old friend Batista back as the head coach after discussions, while Shen Xiangfu will be the assistant coach for the rest of the season,” club president Wu Xiaohui said on Saturday.
Greenland has 4 points from four rounds and is 10th on the CSL table.
“Shenhua is still a competitive team with plenty of good players, and that is why I decided to come back,” said Batista. “I’m sure we can be at a higher position in the standings at the end of the season.”
The 51-year-old left the club last July following reports of unpaid wages as Shenhua was mired in financial crisis in the middle of the season. “I like the city of Shanghai. A lot of things happened when I left the club last year. I want to thank the club for its trust, and it is an honor to come back,” Batista said.
