O’Sullivan socks it to Steadman at worlds
With its players donning waistcoats, bow ties, and smart trousers for matches, snooker prides itself on being one of the smartest sports around.
Ronnie O’Sullivan briefly shattered that image at the world championships in Sheffield, England. O’Sullivan, snooker’s biggest box-office draw, caused a stir in his first-round match debutante Craig Steadman on Tuesday when he removed a new pair of shoes that were giving him discomfort and started playing in his socks.
However, that was in breach of the dress code, and O’Sullivan ended up borrowing a pair from tournament director Mike Ganley. The five-time world champion described them as “stinky old shoes”, but said yesterday, “you know what, they felt great”.
Officials are considering whether O’Sullivan should be fined for a breach of dress code, with rules stating players must ensure they dress in “smart and appropriate” fashion. O’Sullivan won 10-3 and next faces either Matthew Stevens or Mark Williams.
