Skaters brace for Shanghai World Cup leg
The Shanghai leg of the 2015/2016 ISU Short-Track speedskating World Cup will be held at Oriental Sports Center this weekend, starting tomorrow.
As the fourth stop of the six-leg World Cup, the Shanghai event will see top skaters like South Koreans Shim Suk-hee and 2015 Overall women’s world champion Choi Min-jeong and Canada’s Charles Hamelin.
The Chinese national team will send a young squad, with their ages ranging from 16 to 23. Of the 12 skaters, only four were at last year’s Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. Fan Kexin, the 2015 world championships 500-meter winner and 2014 Winter Olympics 1,000 runner-up, will lead the women’s team. The men’s team includes three members who helped China win the 5,000 relay at the 2015 worlds, as well as the 5,000 relay bronze medal in Sochi last year — Wu Dajing, Han Tianyu and Shi Jingnan.
During the previous three stops in Montreal and Toronto in Canada and Japan’s Nagoya, China won a total of 5 golds, 4 silvers and 7 bronzes. But Chinese short-track team head coach Li Yan is not satisfied with the results.
“The national team lacks back-up talents,” Li told a press briefing yesterday. “The past achievements by the national team have raised people’s expectations. It might be difficult to meet those expectations on current form, but I do hope the younger generation will mature quickly.”
It’s the sixth year Shanghai is hosting the series, which will head to Germany’s Dresden and the Netherlands’ Dordrecht for the last two stops. The skaters are taking the tournament as a warm-up for the 2016 ISU World Short-Track Championships to be held in Seoul next March.
Tickets for the event are available at www.eaticket.com, with prices ranging from 50 yuan (US$7.8) to 380 yuan.
