Warburton is Lions captain but no place for Hartley
SAM Warburton will captain the British and Irish Lions on their 10-match tour of New Zealand, leading a 41-man squad that does not include England forwards Dylan Hartley and Joe Launchbury.
Warburton — the 2013 skipper for the tour of Australia — becomes the second player to captain the Lions twice, after Martin Johnson (1997, 2001). The most high-profile omission by Lions coach Warren Gatland is Hartley, who was captain for England’s recent 18-match winning run. Jamie George — his understudy with England — is preferred, along with fellow hookers Ken Owens and Rory Best. Other notable names revealed by Gatland are Harlequins prop Kyle Sinckler, who has yet to start a test for England, England centers Jonathan Joseph and Ben Te’o and Wales No. 8 Ross Moriarty. There are 16 England players selected, along with 12 from Wales, 11 from Ireland and two from Scotland. The tour begins on June 3 and culminates in a three-test series against the All Blacks.
