Waratahs beat Reds to clinch Super semifinal spot

THE defending champions New South Wales Waratahs clinched a semifinal place and a bye in the first round of the Super Rugby playoffs with a 31-5 win over the Queensland Reds yesterday.

The Waratahs, who led 3-0 at halftime but scored four converted tries in the second half, joined the Wellington, New Zealand-based Hurricanes with a weekend off in the first round of the playoffs and will host the semifinals on June 27.

The final is set for July 4.

Their opponents will be determined next weekend in the elimination round. In one match-up involving New Zealand teams, the fifth-place Chiefs will play the fourth-place Highlanders in Dunedin after the Highlanders secured fourth with a 44-7 win over the Auckland-based Blues on Friday.

The ACT Brumbies and Cape Town, South Africa-based Stormers will feature in the other elimination match.

Flyhalf Dan Carter kicked 17 points in his likely last Super match yesterday to lift the Christchurch-based Crusaders to a 37-24 win over the Brumbies.

Carter played his 141st and final match for the Crusaders in Canberra, kicking five penalties and a conversion to lift his tally to nearly 1,700 points over 13 seasons. The veteran All Black is leaving New Zealand at the end of the season to take up a contract in France.

The Crusaders’ ninth win in 16 matches lifted them into seventh place, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2001.

Later, the Hurricanes beat the Hamilton-based Chiefs 21-13 to finish the regular season in first place with 14 wins from 16 games.
