United Ireland launches bid for 2023 World Cup

THE governments in both parts of Ireland have launched a united bid to host the Rugby World Cup in 2023.

The Irish Rugby Football Union made the announcement yesterday alongside leaders of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom where only the Protestant majority plays rugby.

It is the first time that the island’s two governments have mounted a joint effort to host any world tournament. The IRFU estimates the Irish bid’s cost at 1.5 million euros (US$1.85 million). World Rugby plans to unveil the winner in mid-2017, with South Africa considered the early favorite.
