Weirather woes

Tina Weirather has called a halt to her season to give her more time to recover from an injury to her right leg she picked up in a training crash at the Sochi Olympics. The 24-year-old from Liechtenstein told the Liechtensteiner Volksblatt newspaper she would need a further eight weeks of rest to properly heal the damage done to her right tibia in the fall while training for the Olympic downhill race on February 9. That rules her out of the remaining races in the Alpine skiing World Cup and wrecks her chances of winning the overall title. Weirather currently stands second in the overall World Cup standings 139 points behind Maria Hofl-Riesch of Germany with nine races left. She also had a chance of winning the World Cup for super-G as she is second, just 38 points behind Swiss Lara Gut with one race to come.
