Dovizioso takes Catalonia GP to tighten title race
ITALIAN rider Andrea Dovizioso tightened the MotoGP championship fight after winning the Catalonia Grand Prix from a 7th-place start yesterday.
Dovizioso added the victory in Montmelo, Spain, to his victory in Italy in the last race to give Ducati its first back-to-back race winner since Australia’s Casey Stoner in 2010. It was Dovizioso’s 4th career win since his debut in 2008.
Points leader Maverick Vinales failed to make up ground from a 9th-place start, bringing his Yamaha across the finish line 10th — almost 25 seconds after Dovizioso. Maverick’s lead in the standings was reduced to 7 points ahead of Dovizioso after 7 of 18 races.
Defending champion Marc Marquez finished 2nd at Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, more than 3 seconds behind, followed by Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa, who was on pole. Ducati’s Jorge Lorenzo faded from his 2nd-place start to finish 4th, while Valentino Rossi was 8th.
