Calderon joins Sauber in big women’s boost

TATIANA Calderon has joined Sauber in the role of development driver, hoping eventually to break the male domination of the Formula One starting grid.

“I look forward to working with the team and learning as much as I can. It is a step closer to my dream — one day competing in Formula One,” she said in a team statement yesterday.

The 23-year-old Colombian will race in the GP3 support series this season while also embarking on a Sauber program that includes simulator training and working with engineers.

Swiss-based Sauber is the only team with a female principal, Monisha Kaltenborn, although former champion Williams is effectively run by founder Frank Williams’ daughter Claire.

Sauber previously had Swiss racer Simona de Silvestro as an ‘affiliated driver’, aiming at bringing her to Formula One, but that ultimately came to nothing. She raced in the all-electric Formula E series and is now competing in Australia.

Formula One has not had a woman driver start a grand prix since 1976.

Sauber’s race drivers this season are Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein.

Antonio Giovinazzi, however, is substituting for Wehrlein as he recovers from a back injury during this week’s preseason testing near Barcelona.

Three-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, continued his ominous form on day two of preseason testing as he set the fastest time and most laps in the new Mercedes W08 yesterday morning.

Hamilton bettered his best time from Monday in 1 minutes 20.983 seconds to set the fastest time at the Circuit de Catalunya since 2013.

Radical new rules for the 2017 season mean F1 cars are wider and more powerful than their predecessors.

Hamilton was to give way to new teammate Valtteri Bottas for the afternoon session.

Kimi Raikkonen was second fastest but nearly 2 seconds off Hamilton’s time in his first outing in the Ferrari SF70.

Frenchman Esteban Ocon was third fastest for Force India.
