Russia goes back to USSR but fails to win
RUSSIA’S national ice hockey team went back to the USSR by donning the famous jersey of the legendary Soviet squad but failed to recapture past glories as it slumped to defeat against Finland.
Russia on Thursday played the first period of its Euro Hockey Tour match away to Finland in the strip of the famed Red Machine team but ending up losing 3-0. The eye-catching initiative came from the Finland team, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of Tampere’s ice palace and also came onto the ice rink in retro jerseys.
Former Soviet international keeper Alexander Pashkov, who helped win the 1972 Winter Olympics champion, approved of the Finnish plan.
“I like the Finns initiative,” Pashkov said. “It shows that they know history and demonstrate their respect for Soviet hockey.
“It’s an interesting initiative, which looks good for the hockey players. I hope the other hockey superpowers will join this experiment.”
Meanwhile in NHL, the New York Rangers opened the playoffs with a fourth straight postseason victory over Pittsburgh on Thursday, while Detroit and Minnesota both got victories on the road to start their campaigns.
In the day’s other game, Anaheim rallied from another late deficit for a victory over Winnipeg. Derick Brassard and Ryan McDonagh scored in the first period and Henrik Lundqvist made 24 saves as the Rangers beat the Penguins 2-1.
New York shut down Pittsburgh’s top offensive threats, with Sidney Crosby getting just one shot on goal and Evgeni Malkin two.
New York won the final three games of a second-round series against the Penguins last year, rallying from a 1-3 deficit.
The Rangers won the Presidents’ Trophy this season, finishing 15 points ahead of Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference. The last time the Rangers won the trophy was also the last time they won the Stanley Cup, 1993-94.
