The Capitals improved to 10-1-3 in their past 14 games, and avoided a letdown after their 3-2 victory over Chicago in the Winter Classic. Braden Holtby made 29 saves for Washington.

In other NHL games on Sunday, Patrick Sharp scored 1:17 into overtime to give Chicago a 5-4 overtime win over Dallas, Eric Staal scored the only goal in the shootout to lift Carolina past Boston 2-1, and Matt Hendricks scored a pair of goals as Edmonton topped the New York Islanders 5-2.
