Belgium holds Australia in a thriller, Pakistan drubbed

A DRAMATIC penalty-corner conversion with one second to go enabled Belgium to hold world champion Australia to a 4-4 draw while England thrashed Pakistan 8-2 in the Champions Trophy in Bhubaneshwar, India, yesterday.

Belgium made a sensational comeback from 0-3 down and was trailing 3-4 when it appealed for a referral and was awarded the penalty-corner as captain John-John Dohmen was pulled from behind by an Australian defender.

Five-time champion and 13-time overall winner Australia then suffered a setback as Jeremy Hayward rushed out too early and was barred from the crucial defense. Tom Boon tapped the ball in on the second attempt to the jubilation of the Belgium team.

“This is the kind of result that encourages players,” captain Dohmen said. “We’d been trying so hard to score and it was heartening when it (equalizer) finally came. This result is a boost for us because we trailed all through.”

Australia had powered ahead with goals from penalty-corner specialist Chris Ciriello, captain Eddie Ockenden and Jacob Whetton but Belgium made it 3-2 by half-time through Sebastian Docker and Florent van Aubel.

Flynn Ogilvie widened the gap for Australia once again but Dohmen made it 4-3 in the 38th minute before the match hit a barren spell leading up to the referral that produced the equalizer.

However, there was to be no similar comeback in the match to follow as former champion Pakistan succumbed to a belligerent England side that registered its second successive win after a 3-1 victory over Australia in the tournament opener on Saturday.

Captain Barry Middleton, Ashley Jackson, Alastair Brogdon, Samuel Ward, Mark Gleghorne, David Condon, Chris Griffiths and Nick Catlin scored for England.

England led 7-0 by the 48th minute and goals from Pakistan captain Muhammad Imran and Muhammad Arslan Qadir had little bearing on the match.

“We’re obviously disappointed with the result as nothing went right for us,” Imran said. “We saw a lot of flaws in our game but hope to work on them in our next match against Australia.”
