Rory’s Dubai double delight

Rory McIlroy ended his season by winning the US$8 million DP World Tour Championship — his fourth title of the year — yesterday and retained his Race to Dubai crown to become the European No. 1 for the second straight year and a third time in four years.

At the Earth course of Jumeirah Golf Estates, the world No. 3 from Northern Ireland made a Dubai double after a final-round 6-under-par 66 to beat overnight leader Andy Sullivan of England by one shot.

Sullivan’s 68 left him on 268, just short despite stretching his advantage early on.

The world No. 53 birdied two of the first four holes, McIlroy carding a bogey and a birdie over the same stretch to extend the 28-year-old’s lead to three strokes.

McIlroy responded with three successive birdies on holes five to seven, closing to within a stroke at the turn and the world No. 3 took the lead after 14, tapping in from two feet for a third birdie in four holes.

The four-time major winner found the water on 17 but recovered to make a bogey, sealing victory with a 12-inch putt for par on the final green.

It was McIlroy’s 12th tour title, allowing the 26-year-old a third European top-earner crown following victories in 2012 and 2014.

England’s Danny Willet, who started the tournament mere 1,613 points behind McIlroy in the Race to Dubai and needing to beat him to become the European No. 1 for the first time in his career, finished tied for fourth on 13 under (275).

South African Branden Grace (67), who also had a chance to win the Race to Dubai, formerly known as the Order of Merit and given to Europe’s top money earner, was third at 273, while compatriot Charl Schwartzel (69) was one of six players tied on 275.

The battle for the Rookie of the Year was won by South Korea’s An Byeong-hun (71), who finished tied fourth at 13 under — the same as his closest rival at the start of the week, England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick (70).
