Nocera grabs Xiamen lead

France’s Gwladys Nocera battled through rainy conditions yesterday to shoot a 5-under-par 67 for a one-shot lead in the opening round of the Xiamen Open International in southeast China’s Fujian Province.

Thailand’s Kusuma Meechai and Tanaporn Kongkiatkrai were equal second, tied with Chinese Taipei’s Choi Yeon-me at the 300,000-euro (US$337,700) China LPGA Tour-Ladies European Tour (LET) co-sponsored event at Orient Xiamen Golf and Country Club. Chinese teenagers were right in the mix as amateurs Liu Yan and Sui Xiang were two off the pace after rounds of 69, tied for equal fifth with 17-year-old compatriot Shi Yuting, Thailand’s Janya Morrakotpan, Hannah Burke of England, Dane Daisy Nielse and Scotland’s Pamela Pretswell at 3-under. Defending champion Cheng Ssu-chia of Chinese Taipei was at even-par 72.
