Matsuyama in hot start at PGA for early lead

JAPAN’S Hideki Matsuyama seized the initiative at the PGA Championship yesterday, moving atop the leaderboard at 4-under-par as the earliest starters made the turn in the first round.

Matsuyama, playing in the second group off the 10th tee at Whistling Straits, birdied the par-5 11th, the par-4 14th, the par-5 16th and the par-4 18th to make the turn 4-under, with Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn, England’s Tyrrell Hatton and American Harris English all at 3-under.

The final major of the year got under way in perfect conditions, with light breezes greeting the morning starters on the shores of Lake Michigan in Kohler, Wisconsin.

Winds gusting up to 40 kilometers per hour were forecast for the afternoon.

Former world No. 1 Tiger Woods, a 14-time major champion trying to end a career-first streak of two straight missed cuts at major championships, was 1-over through five holes after a bogey at the par-4 14th.

The marquee group of the day, featuring world No. 1 and defending champion Rory McIlroy, Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth and British Open winner Zach Johnson, was due to tee off at 1:20pm.

Northern Ireland’s McIlroy, 26, and Spieth, 22, have between them won four of the last five majors played.

Much of the focus this week will be on the remarkable Spieth as he seeks to join fellow Americans Ben Hogan and Woods as the only players in the modern era to have won three majors in a single year.
