Li, Feng make it a headline day for China on the course
NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD Li Haotong yesterday became the youngest winner of an Asia-Pacific OneAsia tournament, taking the Nanshan China Masters by shooting a final-round 1-under-par 70.
“I think I am too young to win a Masters event,” Li joked. He finished at 9 under, taking home US$180,000 in Longkou, Shandong Province.
Winds gusting up to 64 kilometers per hour added to the challenge on the final day.
“I could not stand sometimes when I was putting as the wind was so strong. I have never played in wind like this,” Li said.
Australian Lee Jun Seok shot a 69 at the par-71 Nanshan International Golf Club to take second place while Todd Baek of South Korea posted a 74 for third.
In Kuala Lumpur, China’s Feng Shanshan rallied to win the LPGA Malaysia yesterday for her fourth LPGA Tour title, playing a six-hole stretch on the back nine in 6 under.
The 25-year-old Feng, four strokes behind Pornanong Phatlum entering the round, closed with a bogey-free 8-under 63 for a three-stroke victory over the Thai.
Feng birdied Nos. 11-14 to tie Phatlum at 16 under and pulled away with a four-stroke swing when she holed a 10-foot eagle putt on the par-5 16th and Phatlum made a double bogey on the par-3 15th. Feng parred the final two holes to finish at 18-under 266.
Phatlum, who fired a 70, was trying to become the LPGA Tour’s first Thai winner.
Sweden’s Pernilla Lindberg (63) and South Korea’s Ryu So-yeon (67) and Chella Choi (67) tied for third at 14 under.
Feng is projected to jump from ninth to fifth in the world after her victory.
