Kim wins Reignwood Classic in Korean top-3 sweep

KIM In-kyung won the Reignwood LPGA Classic in Beijing yesterday for her first victory in six years, making an eagle and a birdie on the two late par 5s to lead a South Korean sweep of the top three places.

The 28-year-old Kim shot a 7-under-par 66 at Reignwood Pine Valley, rebounding from a bogey on the par-5 ninth to win her fourth LPGA Tour title and first since the 2010 Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Mexico.

Kim finished at 24-under 268, a stroke ahead of third-round leader Hur Mi-jung and 2014 winner Lee Mi-rim in the first tournament in the tour’s six-event Asian Swing.

“I just wanted to play my game. I can’t control anyone else’s game,” Kim said. “I feel good that I was able to play how I wanted to play. Even the result, I really try not to focus on result so much. Then I wouldn’t be able to perform the way I wanted.”

Hur birdied five of the last six for a 70 in the round delayed 1 1/2 hours at the start because of rain and lightning. She opened bogey-bogey-birdie-bogey and parred the next eight.

Lee had a 68. She had a double bogey on No. 9, then played the back nine in 6-under 31 with an eagle and five birdies.

China’s Feng Shanshan, the 2013 winner in the event that wasn’t played last year, fired a 69 to tie for fourth with Canada’s Brooke Henderson (71) at 21 under. Second-ranked Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand shot a 65 to tie for sixth at 18 under and take the lead from the idle Lydia Ko of New Zealand in the player of the year points race.

In Tamsui, Lu Wei-chih won for the first time since surgery four years ago to remove a brain tumor, taking his home Mercuries Taiwan Masters for the third time yesterday at windy Taiwan Golf and Country Club.

The 37-year-old Lu closed with a 2-under 70 to finish at 5-under 283, a stroke ahead of Miguel Tabuena of the Philippines. Lu has four Asian Tour victories, also winning on his home course in 2005 and 2011.

Tabuena also fired a 70.

The tournament was played opposite the tour’s Shinhan Donghae Open in South Korea. India’s Ganganjeet Bhullar won that event, closing with a 4-under 67 in rainy Incheon for a one-stroke victory over Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent and South Korea’s Kim Tae-woo.

Australia’s Scott Hend increased his lead atop the order of merit, tying for sixth to push his season total to US$763,252.
