Jin retains lead at Asia-Pacific Amateur

FIRST-ROUND leader Jin Cheng of China maintained a two-shot lead at the Asia-Pacific Amateur yesterday after a 2-under 68 in the second round at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club in China’s Hong Kong.
The 17-year-old had a 36-hole total of 10-under 130. Takashi Ogiso of Japan shot 65 to sit in second place going into the weekend on the picturesque peninsula course that overlooks the South China Sea.
Australians Cameron Davis and Ryan Ruffels, each with 64s, were in a group tied for third, three behind Jin. Ruffels is the lowest-ranked amateur here at No. 8.
Hong Kong-born Australian Matthew Cheung also shot 64 to move into contention, five strokes behind Jin and tied for 11th.
The weather forecast for the weekend is for gusty winds and showers. Yesterday, the wind subsided in the early afternoon after a gusty morning, then increased again late in the afternoon.
Nick Voke of New Zealand, who completed his first-round 64 yesterday morning due to a thunderstorm delay on Thursday, shot a second-round 71 and was at 5 under.
Defending champion Antonio Murdaca of Australia shot 70 and was at 1 under.
Guan Tianlang of China, the 2012 champion, shot 73 and was at 1 over, two strokes inside the cutline of 3 over.
The tournament champion receives an invitation to next year’s Masters. The champion and runner-up get a place in the final round of qualifying for the 2016 British Open at Royal Troon.
