Hend pulls 2 clear of Lahiri

DEFENDING champion Scott Hend of Australia raced two shots clear of India’s Anirban Lahiri after firing a 4-under-par 67 in the third round of the Venetian Macau Open yesterday.

Hend produced three birdies over his closing six holes for a three-day 14-under 199 total to give himself a shot at winning a second straight title following his triumph at the Hong Kong Open last week.

Lahiri, who was runner-up to Hend in China’s Macau last season, carded a solid bogey-free 67 while Thai Prom Meesawat fired the day’s best of 64 to lie three behind the leader in the US$900,000 Asian Tour event.

In Sanya, south China’s Hainan Island, American Jessica Korda rebounded from an opening double bogey for a share of the second-round lead at the LPGA Blue Bay Championship yesterday.

Korda made seven birdies in a 14-hole stretch — the last three on Nos. 14-16 — and shot a 5-under 67 to match South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace at 11-under 133. Pace had seven birdies and a bogey in a 66.

South Korea’s Chella Choi was 10 under after a 66.

Rain washed out play on Friday and forced tour officials to cut the event from 72 to 54 holes.
