Feng stays on course in Dubai

CHINA’S Feng Shanshan continued to motor towards her second Dubai Ladies Masters title in three years when the world No. 5 shot a 6-under-par 66 in the penultimate round of the season-ending championship of the Ladies European Tour and leads by five shots going into the final day.

Feng, the highest ranked player in the field, moved to 17 under for the tournament, five clear of Melissa Reid of England, who showed welcome signs of a return to top form after a bogey-free round of 7-under 65, the best card of the day at the Majlis course of Emirates Golf Club yesterday.

England’s Charley Hull, the reigning Order of Merit leader, remained in contention to become the new European No. 1 when she came back strongly from a bogey-triple bogey stretch in the middle of her round to make three birdies in her next six holes for a 3-under 69.

Hull, 18, was tied for third at 10 under along side world No. 12 Anna Nordqvist (68) of Sweden and 2012 European No. 1 Carlota Ciganda (66) of Spain.

Hull is seven shots behind Feng, but she is three shots ahead of France’s Gwladys Nocera, the only player this week who can stop her from winning the Order of Merit crown. Nocera struggled throughout the day for a 71 and is tied ninth at 209. She needs to finish at least inside the top-four to win the Order of Merit for a second time.

Feng, who started with a birdie and made an eagle on the third hole when she struck her second shot to a foot from the pin, made her only bogey of the day when she hit her tee shot into the water on the fourth hole.

“I think I did pretty well,” Feng said. “I started very well but I think Charley definitely gave me a lot of pressure for the first 10 holes.

“And then, it was kind of like a very big switch in the next two holes, because I made 2-under and she was actually 4-over for those two holes. There was a little more pressure off after that and I played well on the back, too.”

Reid, who hasn’t won a tournament since 2012, was delighted with her brilliant round. “Yeah, it’s been a long time coming,” said the 27-year-old. “I worked actually a week with my coach, Kevin Craggs, at Saadiyat, and I think we just kind of found the missing ingredient. So it was nice to put it into play.”

In Chonburi, outside Bangkok, former champion Lee Westwood was relieved to card a 1-under-par 71 in windier conditions to trail Thailand Championship leader and English countryman Tommy Fleetwood by one shot after the second round yesterday.

Westwood had five birdies against four bogeys in rough he called brutal, and considered he played well at Amata Spring Country Club. The 2011 champion was at 3-under 141, tied with Marcus Fraser of Australia (72).

Making his debut in the Asian Tour event, new leader Fleetwood shot 69, spoiled only by a bogey on the fourth.

US Open champion Martin Kaymer was at 3 under for the tournament after 13 holes, but bogeys on the 14th and finishing hole dropped him to 1-under 143 and into a tie for sixth with Thai No. 1 Thongchai Jaidee (71), and American Paul Peterson (72). Defending champion Sergio Garcia (75) and two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson (70) were at 2 over.
