Wu, Daley set to make city splash

LOCAL diver Wu Minxia and London Olympic bronze medalist Thomas Daley of England have confirmed their participation at the 2014 FINA Diving World Cup to be held at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center this month, organizers said yesterday.

Nine titles are on offer at the July 15-20 event — women’s and men’s 3-meter springboard, 10m platform, 3m springboard synchronized and 10m platform synchro. A new Team Event will be introduced this year at the Cup, which will see more than 300 participants from 34 countries and regions.

Hometown favorite Wu, 28, will obviously be the star attraction. The gold medalist at three consecutive Olympic Games will partner Shi Tingmao in the women’s 3m synchro.

The Chinese diving team is at full strength and includes He Zi, Chen Ruolin, He Chong, Qiu Bo, and Qin Kai.  China made a clean sweep of all the eight titles at the last World Cup held in London two years ago

The venue, nicknamed “Moon Bay” due to its crescent-shaped roof, hosted the 2011 World Aquatics Championships.

Daley is not a stranger to Shanghai having competed here three years ago, when he paired with Peter Waterfield in the 10m synchro to finish 6th at the worlds. He managed a 5th-place finish in the individual event, which was won by Qiu Bo.

Other names confirmed for the event include American David Boudia, the 10m platform champion at 2012 London Olympics, and Russian duo Ilya Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov, the 3m synchro silver medalists in Shanghai three years ago.

Ticket prices range from 60 yuan (US$9.66) to 380 yuan for the finals, and 20 to 100 yuan for the preliminary rounds. Fans can log on to www.eaticket.com.
