Diver Wu confirms she will compete in Shanghai event

Chinese diver Wu Minxia and the UK’s Thomas Daley have confirmed they will compete at the 2014 FINA Diving World Cup at Shanghai Oriental Sports Center this month, the organizer announced today.

The event is to be held from July 15 to 20. A new team event will be introduced this year.

The organizer has already confirmed that more than 300 divers and coaches from 34 countries and regions will be participating.

Wu Minxia, 28, said she would not miss the world-class event in her hometown. She won a gold medal in three straight Olympics and will partner Shi Tingmao in the women’s 3m synchro.

China’s diving team is bringing a star-studded squad to Shanghai. He Zi, Chen Ruolin, He Chong, Qiu Bo and Qin Kai are all expected to compete.

The venue, nick named “Moon Bay” due to its crescent shaped roof, hosted the 2011 World Aquatics Championships.

Daley, who won a bronze medal at the London Olympics, will also compete. In his last competition in Shanghai two years ago, he paired with Peter Waterfield in the 10m synchro and finished 6th. He managed a 5th place finish in the individual event, which was won by Qiu.

Other names confirmed for the event include American David Boudia, who won gold in the men’s 10m platform at the 2012 London Olympic Games, and the Russian pair Ilya Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov. They won silver in the men’s 3m synchro two years ago in Shanghai.

Ticket price ranges from 60 yuan to 380 yuan (US$61.14) for finals, and 20 yuan to 100 yuan for the preliminary rounds. Fans can log on to www.eaticket.com for tickets and more information.
