Chinese divers scoop 2 golds, Wu thrills with an eye on Rio
WITH eyes on the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, local diver Wu Minxia delivered a faultless performance on the 3m synchro springboard at the FINA Diving World Cup in Shanghai yesterday.
The 28-year-old Olympic and world champion partnered Shi Tingmao and lead from the very first round to claim one of the two gold medals on offer yesterday at the Oriental Sports Center.
Chinese pair Lin Yue and Cao Yuan scooped the other gold in the men’s 10m synchro.
It is the only event that Wu will compete in the 6-day event.
“It is the team’s decision that I take part in only one item.
“Given my current condition, the team wants me to retain my form till the 2016 Olympic Games. Therefore, I will focus only on synchro events,” Wu said.
The straps around her arms and ankles were more for protection than for any real injury, Wu said.
The Shanghai native said she was excited to be competing in front of the home crowd. Being the oldest diver in Team China, Wu said she does not want to compare with anyone else, but would give her best in any competition.
Shi has been partnering Wu since last year. The 22-year-old was satisfied with the duo’s performance, though she said there was still room for improvement.
Calling Wu “sister Xia,” Shi hoped to achieve the level of success that Wu enjoyed with her former partner Guo Jingjing, who retired in 2011.
Wu and Shi topped the qualifying rounds in the morning. The last pair to compete among 12 pairs of competitors, Wu and Shi topped four of the five total rounds in the final. They won the event with a total of 340.50 points — 22 points more than Canadian pair Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware, who won the silver. The bronze medal went to Maddison Keeney and Anabelle Smith from Australia.
