Mezgec takes first stage

SLOVENIA’S Luka Mezgec won the first stage of cycling’s five-day Tour of Beijing in a sprint finish yesterday. Team Sky controlled the race entry into Zhangjiakou, part of Beijing’s bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, but a series of attacks whittled away the black jerseys at the front of the peloton.

American Tyler Farrar took the lead in the finishing straight with a burst of speed, but the 26-year-old Giant-Shimano rider overhauled him in the approach to the line, and Australia’s Caleb Ewan (Orica GreenEDGE) sneaked up in the last few meters to take second place from Garmin-Sharp’s Farrar by inches. The race, the last WorldTour event of the season, is being run for the last time.
