Crashes mar 9th stage

COLOMBIAN Rigoberto Uran of Cannondale-Drapac won a drama-filled ninth stage of the Tour de France, a 181.5-kilometer trek from Nantua to Chambery, yesterday.

He beat France’s Warren Barguil (Team Sunweb) after a photo finish. Briton Chris Froome (Team Sky) retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey after finishing third.

Pre-race favorite Richie Porte of Australia (BMC Racing) and Froome’s lieutenant Geraint Thomas crashed out.

Thomas, who started the day second overall, had already crashed out 100km from the finish when Porte, who was fifth, slipped off the tarmac and onto a grass verge on the inside of a rapid descent. He careered across the road and clattered into Ireland’s Dan Martin, bringing the two crashing. Porte was given immediate medical assistance. Organizers said he was conscious and speaking.
