South Africa opening batsman Petersen retires

SOUTH Africa opening batsman Alviro Petersen retired from international cricket yesterday after the top-ranked Proteas sealed a 2-0 test series win over the West Indies in Cape Town.

Petersen’s teammates came out from their dressing room to stand near him as he made his announcement at a news conference at Newlands following South Africa’s eight-wicket victory in the third and final test.

“I feel that at 34 it is time for me to retire from international cricket and to move on with my career,” Petersen said, adding he would focus on playing in South Africa and England.

His career-best 182 against England in 2012 “was pivotal to the Proteas beating England 2-0 and starting our standing as one of the world’s best teams,” Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat said.

Earlier, opener Dean Elgar hit an unbeaten 60 as South Africa coasted to an eight-wicket win over West Indies retain their ranking as the top test side.

Elgar and captain Hashim Amla (38 not out) reached 124 for two wickets before lunch on the final day. The second test was a rain-affected draw.

Meanwhile, David Warner said he was in tears before he went out to score an emotional century to put Australia in a strong position in the final test against India yesterday.

Warner, who was deeply affected by the death of his close friend Phillip Hughes in November, scored his first test century at the Sydney Cricket Ground where Hughes was killed.

Warner crashed 101 off 114 balls as Australia took advantage of winning the toss to be 348 for two at first-day stumps.

When Warner reached 63, the score Hughes was on when he was fatally struck, he kissed the ground close to where Hughes was hit and then looked skyward before clapping.

“It’s always going to be in the back of my mind and I’m always going to pay tribute to my little mate,” Warner said.
