India’s Manohar resigns as chairman of ICC

SHASHANK Manohar has resigned as International Cricket Council chairman, the governing body said yesterday.

The ICC said in a statement it received Manohar’s resignation via email and the ICC Board will now assess the situation and next steps before making a further announcement. Manohar was elected as the first unopposed ICC chairman in May 2016 for a two-year term but resigned after only eight months. Manohar had been trying to decentralize the powers held by “Big Three” member boards comprising India, Australia and England. According to media in India, Manohar wrote to ICC chief executive David Richardson and said he tried his best to be fair and impartial in deciding matters in the functioning of the board. “However, for personal reasons it is not possible for me to hold the august office of ICC Chairman and hence I am tendering my resignation as Chairman with immediate effect,” Manohar said.
