Australia loses test crown after Sri Lanka whitewash
AUSTRALIA lost its crown as the king of test cricket yesterday after another devastating burst of spin bowling from the veteran Rangana Herath helped Sri Lanka clinch an historic series whitewash.
Set a formidable target of 324 in its second innings of the third and final test, Australia collapsed and was bowled out for just 160 as Herath took seven for 64 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. It was the third time in a row that the Australians had lost all of its tests in an away series against teams from the subcontinent and allowed India, which just won a series in West Indies, to regain the No. 1 slot in the world rankings. Pakistan leapfrogged Australia into second place after Misbah-ul-Haq’s team drew its series with England 2-2 on Sunday.
