Zou takes shot at world title again

CHINESE boxer Zou Shiming will return to the ring next month for the WBO International flyweight title bout in Shanghai against South American champion Natan Santana Coutinho.
Zou, a former Olympic champion, missed out on his first professional world title in March after losing to Thailand’s Amnat Ruenroeng in an IBF flyweight title fight in Macau. Following the defeat, Zou took a break from the sport for eight months, during which he even took part in a reality TV show.
But the 34-year-old has found it hard to put down the boxing gloves, and is now back to regular training.
“I can scent the blood, which makes me miss the boxing ring,” Zou said at an event to promote the fight yesterday.
“I might be considered young as a professional, but the fact is I’m probably the oldest Chinese boxer active in the ring,” said Zou. “I will devote myself and concentrate on every single fight I’m competing in.”
Zou started his professional career in January 2012. He beat Colombian Luis De La Rosa in July 2014 to become the WBO International flyweight champion, but lost the title due to long absence from the ring.
He aims to win back the crown when he meets Coutinho at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center on January 30.
It will also be his first professional fight on the mainland — his previous seven bouts were contested in Macau.
Zou’s 21-year-old Brazilian opponent has a record of 12-0, 10KOs.
“He has good techniques and footwork,” Zou, who himself has a 6-1, 1KO record, said of his opponent. “I will be working with Freddie’s (Roach) assistant. I will be training in Shanghai and focus on improving techniques and muscle strength.”
The Shanghai event will feature a total of seven bouts with other Chinese boxers like Yang Lianhui, Ma Yiming and Qu Peng also putting up a show. Tickets are available at www.wepiao.com with prices ranging from 88 yuan (US$13.6) to 6880 yuan.
