Yang-Cuenca clash

UNDEFEATED Dalian boxer Yang Lianhui (Ik Yang) has eyes on the vacant IBF Junior Welterweight belt when he meets Argentine Cesar Cuenca in China’s Macau on July 18 in what will be a bout between the top-two ranked IBF junior welterweight boxers.

The 30-year-old Yang became the IBF Pan Pacific Junior Welterweight champion after his Thai opponent retired after four rounds of their 10-round bout in Shanghai last December. He then defended the title after a TKO win in Macau in March. If Yang wins next month’s bout against Cuenca at the Venetian Cotai Arena, he will become China’s second world champion outside the amateur ring. The first Chinese world champion boxer was Xiong Zhaozhong, winner of the little recognized WBC “minimum weight” (light flyweight) category in 2012.
